Hot Water Heaters

Hot Water Heaters

Hot water tanks and heaters can affect more than just water temperature within your home. They are also a major source of energy consumption, using about 20% or more of your utility bill. Keeping hot water tanks and heaters in good repair can save a considerable amount on your annual electricity bill. Regular maintenance can also avoid major and costly repairs down the road. All hot water heaters require an energy source whether it be gas or electricity. If maintained regularly, a typical water heater in a residential home can last anywhere from about 6 to 10 years or more.

Regardless of the type of water heater your home is equipped with, the experienced and professional plumbers at Sidney Plumbing will assess and explain exactly what repairs are needed, if any. We provide service or replacement for:

  • Gas – This process involves a gas burner which heats incoming cold water for all hot water taps throughout your home.
  • Electric – This type of hot water heater uses one or two direct immersion heating elements, controlled by a thermostat or microprocessor control module.
  • Boiler/Indirect – These are typically powered by gas, oil, or electricity. This system provides hot water on demand as water is heated when it passes through a heat exchanger.

SAFETY

According to the Canada Safety Council, most homes have their hot water heaters set at 60°C (140°F). Caution however must be advised as this temperature setting can cause scalding or burns especially to children or the elderly in your home. To help avoid such occurrences, hot water set to this temperature should always be mixed with cold water either at the fixture or the faucet. Another safety consideration is the temperature that your water is being stored at. The storage of hot water below 60°C can cause significant bacteria growth. The professionals at Sidney Plumbing will ensure that all safety measures are taken to protect your family from possible scalding or bacteria growth in your hot water storage.
